Team Preview – Manchester city

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Last year’s title winners are back, can they maintain the rage? They have enough money to refresh their squad, which way will they go? At their best they are a free flowing force with a staunch backline. The only worry for fantasy managers is rotation, who will be ever-present?

 Goal Keepers

Joe hart is the only name worth mentioning here, priced at a steep 7.0 I don’t think there is any reason to pay that for a keeper when they are getting zero attacking points. Their defenders will get the same clean sheet points but offer something going forward. Pantimillion will be an able backup if required.

Defenders

Last year City kept 17 clean sheets and conceded one goal 14 times… they are seriously tight at the back. So we need to get on one of their defenders, but who is nailed on? Starting centrally, Kompany is nailed on, but at 7.5 may be out of range, Lescott is close to nailed on, depending on new buys, he is priced at 6.5 and seems a good purchase seeing that he only scored 10 less than Kompany last term, he also has a presence at set pieces too. Toure and Savic are probably too speculative at this stage. At full back we have a small pool of players priced at 6.0. Clichy, Richards, Zabaleta and Kolorov. Picking the right one is tough. I’d say Clichy is the closest to nailed on at left back, Kolorov takes a mean free kick but can’t be relied on to defend, Richards will be at the Olympics to start but he should play the bulk of the time at right back but Zabaleta seems to play at the most  inopportune times for us fantasy managers. Tread with care with your city defenders!

Midfielders

Another fantasy minefield with rotation everywhere. City scored 93 goals last year; you want to at least be involved in some of them! At 10.0 Silva is the highest priced mid in the game scoring 184 points… but also the most nailed on guy here. Will you fork out? Nasri at 8.5 is a great scorer but in and out a touch, steer clear for mine. Toure at 8.0 seems a bargain but shifts from attacking to holding week to week…. He isn’t the worst pick, he will be solid for you, is definitely an option. Adam Johnson at 7.0 is a star! And would score loads at any other club but he just can’t get his foot in the door here, if he moves clubs jump on! Milner at 6.5 seems wasted and stifled at city, Barry 5.5 is holding but scores a few points and De Jong 4.5 is even further back holding! Good luck picking your man from this lot.

Forwards

The smart way into their 93 goals is through the forwards, Logical option is Aguero at 11.5, he scored 211 pts last year, albeit in bursts and is a captain option. Tevez and Balotelli at 9.0 will scores goals, (if still there) and Balotelli is on pens… if he can keep it together he could be a smart pick up. Beware the red card though. Dzeko at 7.5 would score a lot of goals at another club, but can’t get a consistent run here. Keep an eye out, if he plays a few in a row get on him for a small burst. He generally plays in a horses for courses role, when the opposition dictates it.

Being a power club most fixtures are winnable for City, so we all need one or more of their assets. They are free flowing going forward and tight at the back so either way you will win. Who will you pick?

Agree with everything Adzman has said here.

Absolute locks in terms of job security, assuming they’re fit, are Hart, Clichy, Lescott, Kompany, Silva, Toure and Aguero. Expect the rest to have high rotation and thus risks of sitting on the pine.

Richards will be played against the weaker teams were he is able to press up the field more and have more of an attacking presence. Zabba against the harder teams where his defensive qualities over Richards are valued by Mancini more.

Tevez will score goals, if played. Only thing is himself and Aguero are players cut from the same mould, although when played together they do tend to have that sixth sense , think the demolition of Norwich last year specifically Aguero’s first (check out extended highlights on CityTV on the offcial Man City site.

Toure is the most important player in the team. Steps up in the big games, however fantasy wise is a player who assists the assister.

Tevez looked very lively fit and trim in the preseason match against Arsenal. Aguero looked sloppy bit should find his touch. For anyone who’s interested the City website has the whole match highlights of pre season match against Arsenal.

Will provide another write up after the other friendly v Malaysia. Currently half time.

Think that would be the best litmus test. All the Euro players are not back in camp yet.

Mancini lined up again with a 3-5-2. Pantilimon at the back, a back three of Savic, Kolo Toure and Zabaleta (Kompany went back home as he has a minor calf tear). Kolarov as left wing back and Johnson as right wing back.

Razak was the shield for the defence. Ya Ya and Denis Suarez (Nir Biton not allowed to play in Malaysia dues to his Israeli heritage)were in the guts.

        Tevez Ageuro combination up top.

Safe to say the standouts were Aguero and Tevez. Aguero scored one and set up the other two. Both were involved in everything. Could have had a few more goals each.

Other notable performances were a very classy performance by Kolarov. Should have had a penalty after a incisive run. Ref must have been a Rag. Johnson actually tracked back – a notable criticism of him last year from Mancini, and probably a reason why he prefers Milner out wide is the fact that AJ doesn’t track back which can open the team up when Richards and Clichy are bombing up the wings. AJ made a few crunching tackles in the penalty area, and was Johnny on the spot for his well taken goal.

Denis Suarez impressed as well. Was pulling the strings in midfield and setting the tone of the game early on – tired in the second half. Very Silva-esque performance. Expect to see a few more runs this year however probably won’t be Fantasy relevant.

Caveats – game was extremely open and opposition were not that great, so the result is probably a bit of a false economy. Pitch was horrendous and affected some of the play.

After watching this last two games it is clear that Mancini has a dilemma. Tevez is playing himself into contention here. Consistently been the best player over the two games on this leg of the tour. Could very well be in the starting line up, however would be prudent to wait until the Charity Shield when Mancini has all the squad at his disposal before making the call on him.
