Club preview – Wigan

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Wigan aren’t the prettiest team in the prem, they always seem to be too good to relegate but not good enough to climb the table. Boss Dave Whelan bought in manager Martinez to add a touch of flair to his side and it has worked to an extent but come the middle of winter the rugby mad Wigans don’t really rock up to see round ball so there is usually a half full stadium and chopped up pitch making it difficult to play pretty football. Let’s take a look at their fantasy prospects.

Goal Keepers

Al Habsi is a freakish shot stopper and well worthy of a place in your side. For the points he lacks in clean sheets he makes up for in saves each week. He scored 138 points and is priced at 5. If you are playing the fixtures you could do worse than pick this guy, he won’t let you down.

Wigan are not the tightest team at the back so if you are choosing their defenders you would like one that gets forward at least.  At 5.0 you have Boyce or Caldwell both scored round 100 points including 3 goals each.  At 4.5 you have Alcaraz who can get his head to the ball at set pieces, he scored three last year, Or Figueroa who bombs forward all day, he only made one assist last year but has potential for more. He is most remembered for ‘that’ goal from half way. If you are flat broke Stam at 4.0 gets some games on a wing.

Martinez has bevy of midfielders at his disposal, most of which are fantasy relevant. Moses if he stays is interesting, he will cost you 7.0 after 6 goals and 6 assists last year, he started slowly but really worked into the season, he may step right up this year as he is prime age. The likes of Mc Arthur, Gomez and Watson at 5.5 all scored as handful of goals, the latter two thanks to being on penalties; if pens are important to you Gomez may be your cheapie.  But the real man at 5.5 is classy Beasejour, he came half way through the year and racked up 7 assists, we can only guess how good he will be once really bedded into the team; South Americans usually take a while. I think he is a strong FPL choice this year at 5.5. A touch cheaper at 5.0 is Maloney who will play the year out and would be a good bench option; he notched 3 times last year. If you choose wisely a Wigan mid may work out for you when fixtures allow it.

I don’t think Wigan have any forward options now that roddy has gone, look elsewhere!

Choose your Wigan asset wisely, it may prove to be a wise FPL move that will blindside your league mates.
