Here we go. Man United. The addition of Shinji Kagawa along with the impending arrival of Brazilian starlet Lucas Moura, coupled with the return of defensive stalwart Nemanja Vidic means Manchester United will be strong candidates to win silverware in 2012-13. But with all the influx of talent that was lacking last year, how will they shape up this campaign? (Great segue Seags)…
So there it is. The main problem with picking this side was the formation. Having traditionally played a 4-4-1-1 /4-4-2 variation , I think the time and the squad is right to play a 4-2-3-1, especially if they wish to make dents during their European campaign.
LB will be Evra‘s to lose (which he might do if Baines makes a switch) and Rafael remains the best right-back on the list. The only problem with him is that Jones may be called on to play RB from time to time. I’m 90% sure that Rafael will start though. The Centre-Backs are a little less assured though. If Vidic is fit, he’ll start. I’m picking Jones to start above Ferdinand, mainly because I hate the old bloke. With his age catching up with him, the time looks right for Jones to cement a starting berth, but his versatility could be his downfall as he is shifted around the park, filling in where needed. Don’t be surprised if Rio does start though.
Five midfielders should be picked. Kagawa operates primarily in the hole, so unfortunately for Danny Welbeck I think he gets pushed to the bench. I’m tipping Nani and Valencia to get the starting roles on the flanks over Young. If Young were to start though, I think it would be at Nani’s expense, as Valencia at his best is simply phenomenal. Could be a potential P.O.D! In the middle I think Carrick will be pencilled in, with the old bloke Scholes most likely to make way for a youngster, Cleverley might be a smokie for a starting berth here. Giggs surely can’t keep the young blokes out of the side, and Anderson has failed to fire in his stint at Old Trafford so far and looks to start from the bench.
Forwards: Ha. Do I need to bother. He’ll start, and dominate. Welbeck’s spot in the team looks tentative with Kagawa’s signing, but he will certainly make substitute appearances. If you picked Hernandez or Berbatov, remove yourself from this website immediately.
