International Round Up

Reading Time: 2 minutes

So the 2014 World Cup Qualifiers got underway on the weekend. There were loads of FPL participants playing, so let’s see how they fared for their country!

There were loads of Premier League representatives featuring for their countries on the weekend. There is another round of matches on tuesday, but this is the roundup from the Friday/Saturday/Sunday matches, in dot point form.

RVP scored the opener for the Dutch in their 2-0 win over Turkey.

Kompany and Vertonghen netted for a Belgium team that was comprised mainly of PL assets.

Croatian Nikica Jelavic secured the points against Macedonia.

Diaby put in another impressive performance and slotted the winner for France against Finland.

Cazorla converted for Spain in their friendly against minnows Saudi Arabia. David Silva featured as the sub.

Baggies’ surprise packet Zoltan Gera scored in Hungary’s 5-0 romp of Andorra, but was subbed out of the match with a suspected hamstring strain. Monitor.

Dzeko monstered minnows Liechtenstein in Bosnia’s 8-0 massacre, scoring a hat-trick.

England made light work of Moldova. a 5-0 win was marked by a brace to Lampard, and singles to Defoe, Milner and Baines should have fantasy managers on alert. On the injury front, Terry is expected to miss the Ukraine game and is in doubt for Chelsea’s away match to QPR this saturday night, while Cole is also still a doubt. Bertrand looks a tempting short term prospect.

Snodgrass played well against Serbia. I’m still tempted to jump on him, thanks to his dead-ball threat.

Suarez didn’t play for Uruguay, which is a good thing for his FPL owners, as trips to South America normally require more rest after a long period of travel.

Valencia featured for Ecuador, so monitor his likely game-time for GW4.

For Argentina, Zabaleta featured on the bench, so hopefully will be rested up for the weekend.

Adebayor scored for Togo during their 1-1 draw with Gabon.

Moses assisted in Nigeria’s 2-2 match with Liberia (who??)- he was felled in the penalty box.

Ivory Coast v Senegal saw a number of Premier League boys feature- Gervinho assisted one and scored another, while Yaya Toure provided 2 assists. Cisse scored a ridiculous 25 yard header and assisted Senegal’s other goal.

Luiz, Ramires and Oscar featured for Brazil.

So that just about does it from the players of note who featured. There was whispers that Kagawa had been subbed off with a broken leg, but thankfully it appears he was just substituted off. Monitor him during the week nonetheless though.

Cheers guys,

Wow you weren’t kidding about the Belgium side. 8 of the starting 11 for the Wales game are PL players. When the hell did Belgium become so rich with football talent???

Mate they are going to be something special. Kompany, Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Witsel, Dembele, Fellaini, Hazard, De Bruyne, Lukaku, Mirallas just to name a few guns off the top of my head. How they didn’t qualify for Euro 2012 is beyond me.

Average age of 24. Even their 2 international keepers are only 20 & 24! Definitely good things to come from that national side.

So yeah I think I’ve found my next world cup smokie…
