Unfortunately Seags has fallen ill, hence the lack of a projected XI the past couple of days. Never fear, I’ll be filling in for both the Manchester clubs! With an incredible squad to pick from, it’s hard to tell what their best starting XI actually is. Here’s my thoughts:
The signing of Sagna finally brings some competition to the right back spot, but you’d expect Zabaleta to be the number one option. Kompany is locked on, but Demichelis‘ prospects hang in the balance of the Mangala transfer. If that goes through, he should get the starts. You don’t pay 30 million pounds on a bench player. I would be steering clear of Clichy and Kolarov, both will rotate. Hart should start in goals, but Caballero will push him for his place. I’m avoiding them all with their tough start to the season.
Fernandinho and Yaya Toure will anchor midfield, Fernandinho’s fitness is key for Toure’s prospects as he allows him to push forward more often. Silva and Nasri will be named out wide, but both will drift inside once the game progresses. Guys like Navas, Garcia and Milner will be used as backup.
Dzeko should get the gig up front, their team needs a target man. With Aguero recovering from his World cup exploits, Jovetic should get the nod to begin the season. However once he’s back I can’t see Jovetic pushing Dzeko out of the line-up, not unless he’s clearly out performing him. He will provide backup to Silva and Nasri as well out wide, but both are ahead of him in the pecking order. Negredo will miss at least the first 2 months, and based on his recent form he sits fourth in the pecking order.
CONSIDER: Toure, Dzeko, Silva
WAIT & SEE: Jovetic
AVOID: Fernandinho, Clichy, Kolarov
I’ll have the Manchester United preview out later tonight! There’s plenty to look forward to as far as City are concerned, looking at that team it’s hard not to have them in the top 2.
