After a stunning breakout season last year, the Saints will be hoping to consolidate their great work in pushing into the top 10. After losing Pochettino to Spurs, they will be starting a fresh under new manager Ronald Koeman. With a huge amount of transfers away from the club, they are looking to rebuild. Here’s how they look like setting up to start the season.
It remains to be seen whether they can maintain their great defensive record under Koeman’s management. Bertrand and Clyne should have the right and left back roles locked down, but at 5.0 both will set you back a hefty amount. Fonte is locked on at CB, whilst the other slot is up for grabs due to Lovren’s exit. They could well dip into the transfer market again, if not Yoshida should be the pick. At 4.5 he is the cheapest of the Saints defenders in the mix. Boruc is locked on in goals.
I will be interested to see how they structure up. Schneiderlin continues to be a pain, but looks to be on his way out of the club after stating he is in no way ready to play. Wanyama never really got his chance to impress last season, maybe this year can be his. Cork will also fight for that defensive midfield spot. Davis had the central midfield role all to himself last season, but new loanee Saphir Taider from Inter may force him out of the side. Tadic will be locked on in the number 10 role, whilst Ward-Prowse should get his go on the right of midfield. Both could be great value at 7.5 and 5.0 respectively.
Rodriguez is still recovering from that ACL injury that forced him out of the World Cup. Ramirez may fill his position out on the left to start the season, but J-Rod could be a great POD once he returns. That’s if he stays. Pelle is the main man upfront, arriving from Feyenoord bringing with him a wealth of experience and goals to boot. There isn’t much competition to force him out of the side either, so he will be a key for their prospects this season. I like him, but these signings are always hit and miss. Risky selection, but one that could reward his owners handsomely with a great set of fixtures over the first 12 gameweeks, meeting just one of last seasons top 7 after their opening day clash against Liverpool.
Consider: Tadic, Pelle
Wait and See: Rodriguez, Ward-Prowse, Yoshida
AVOID: Bertrand, Wanyama
Hopefully they can remain the threat they posed last season. I’ll have Spurs out for you later tonight, shit is getting real! Cheers.
