Projected West Brom XI

Reading Time: 2 minutes

There’s no denying West Brom stalled last season. After a breakout season under previous manager Steve Clarke, they stormed into the top 10 with Lukaku as their focal point. Since losing him, they haven’t carried the same attacking threat, and have thus slid away into the realms of fantasy irrelevance. A few big name signings could turn things around for them.

Pocognoli will hold down the left back slot, but isn’t really relevant at 4.5. Lescott, Olsson and McCauley will fight for the centre back slots, Lescott is the safest of the lot but still isn’t worth your time, let alone money. The right back position is where I had the most difficulty, and there’s many ways they could go about it. The arrival of Costa Rican right back Gamboa threw Wisdom’s starting spot into doubt, therefore his place on our benches also must be questioned. He isn’t yet fit, so Wisdom will start the season, but once he returns there’s 2 ways it could go. The most promising of which is West Brom’s vacant wings. They don’t really have a recognised winger, and Gamboa is great going forward. If he does play OOP, get him straight on the watchlist. The other option is that Sessegnon plays on the wing, but that doesn’t seem too likely. Wisdom and Gamboa will either both be fantastic value, or neither be worth it at all.

They are a tough team to get a read on to be honest. The only value I could possibly see in their midfield is Brunt, and his role could be either out wide or in the centre of the park. His set-pieces are great, but I’d just avoid him and the rest of his midfield teammates altogether.

Finally up forward, where there certainly could be some value. Ideye may miss the start of the season, but will slot straight in once fit. At 6.0 he must be considered. Anichebe and Berahino will fight it out for the second striker slot, but I don’t see value in either. Berahino could be a solid pick if he takes the next step forward in his game, but we’re yet to see it.

In Summary:

Locks: None
Consider: Wisdom
Wait & See: Gamboa, Ideye, Berahino
Avoid: Sessegnon, Lescott, Morrison

With only West Ham remaining, the final countdown is on! I’ll have that posted for you guys this afternoon, with my team reveal hopefully going up later tonight. It’s going to be a busy 48 hours, I just can’t wait for the return of the footy!

The next few weeks will be huge between the return to the soccer and Richmond winning their last 3 games to steal 8th spot and go into finals with 9 on the trot

Thanks Matt! he only just transferred to QPR, but what are your thoughts on Isla? 5.0 and has the RWB/RM spot to himself. Also rotates well with some other defenders of mine.
