Newcastle are up next in the starting XI predictions. After a horror end to last season they will be hoping to transform things under new manager Steve McClaren.
Krul is clearly Newcastle’s number one when fit (Which he is). See my article on the keepers as to how I think he will fare!
Newcastle’s defence need some serious work. Coloccini is captain and will probably start, but I don’t rate him. New signing Lascelles is only 21, but in competition with Williamson and Taylor I expect to see him start. If Taylor can stay fit he might be a chance at 4.0, but that’s a ridiculous statement to even make. I give him 2 weeks before his first trip to hospital. Haidara should start from the left, whilst Janmaat is a sure starter at right back.
It’s not easy to see how Newcastle will line up through the centre. De Jong and Wijnaldum are both attacking threats and will be key to Newcastle’s season. While De Jong if sit (Probably not long) he is likely to play behind the striker. Whether Wijnaldum plays out wide in an attacking 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 or in the middle alongside De Jong is yet to be determined. Both are great options.
Cabella and Sissoko are also likely to get starts, however I’d avoid them. Aarons will be around the mark, perhaps he’ll start the season coming off the bench. Tiote and Abeid will fight with Colback for the defensive midfield spot, none are relevant.
Mitrovic will fight with Cisse for the lone striker role. Considering his fantastic goal scoring history and his price tag, I’d suggest that Mitrovic will get first chance. Ayoze could play out wide, however I can’t see him starting through the middle. His job security is questionable.
50/50: Wijnaldum has to be high on your watch lists. 7.0 is slightly more than I had hoped, but that was probably optimistic. Newcastle’s lack of goals is a concern, however him and Mitrovic could form a lethal partnership. He has scored 2 in 2 during pre-season and is a goal scorer wherever he plays. Great differential.
Avoid: For some reason Sissoko is selected by 2.3% of teams, that equates to around 50000 managers! His role isn’t stable and he hasn’t been in great form recently. Just 4 goals and 3 assists last season is more of what you should expect to come.
Breakout: Aarons is certainly one to consider in this bracket. Most teams are selecting a 5.0 option who could potentially breakout. Ibe is a popular choice, but Aarons shouldn’t be underestimated. He has shown great form during pre-season, however his job security remains questionable. If he starts in GW1, watch his form. I’m tipping him to have a solid season.
Southampton are up next, 9 days to go!
